To the Beach!

Today, our students travelled from the cloud forest to the beach, with stops for a crocodile river cruise and rainforest canopy tour. The crocodile adventure took our students to the mouth of the Tarcoles River, where we saw several impressive crocodiles and countless unique birds. This excursion is always a hit, as there is always something interesting to see and the crocodile encounters are both impressive and close-range. One group even had the chance to witness a local fisherman feeding one of the larger crocs!

After the cruise, we made our way inland to take small gondolas up through a rainforest canopy. While our untrained eyes likely missed more than we saw, our students enjoyed the views and shouting at their friends on passing gondolas. 

Tonight, we sleep to the sound of crashing waves, as we are staying at a hotel south of Jacó on Playa Hermosa (not to be confused with the slightly better known Playa Hermosa further south). After some pool time and dinner, our students are headed to their rooms excited for an early morning and ever-popular beach day.

Pura vida!

    Love a these pictures. And that one pool party scene is giving me angst about college parties! Again, can’t thank all the teachers and guides enough for what is an amazing trip.

Upon arriving to San Jose, our only-a-little-exhausted travelers had a quick driving tour of the central city before a delicious lunch of chicken, salad, and mashed potatoes. Afterwards, we made our way to the country’s largest urban park and former airport, La Sabana. We had time to see our friends from the other flights and enjoy a perfectly temperate afternoon. With tanks empty, we then made our way to the hotel for dinner and an early bedtime. With the fun already started and plenty to look forward to, our students didn’t complain about the 8:45 “lights out”. An incident-free travel day is always worth celebrating, and we have plenty ahead of us!

The Road to Arenal

If every day of the trip is as fun and smooth as our first full day in Costa Rica, then we are in for a great trip! Fueled by gallo pinto and fresh fruit, our students made their way to a coffee plantation on the way to La Fortuna. At the plantation, our students learned all about the coffee growing process, tasted a coffee drink so sugary and chocolaty it won over even the anti-coffee folks, and visited our first gift shop. With lighter wallets and arms full of souvenirs, we hit the buses.   We wound our way to the other side of the mountains for lunch on the Sarapiqui River, where we were joined by iguanas, hummingbirds, and a range of colorful song birds.  Thanks to all the families for setting those early alarms, navigating bags and sleepy teens, and getting to the airport on time! We are off to a great start, and the kids couldn’t be more excited. Next stop: San José!
