Beach Day!

From day one, our chaperones have been asked one question more than any other: “But when is the beach?” Finally today, we had a response that satisfied our students. Manuel Antonio, near the town of Quepos, is world famous for its pristine beaches and excellent wildlife viewing. After sprinting past the numerous monkeys, sloths, and other fauna of the forest, our students finally had their beach day!

As this was our only activity of the day, our students made the most of their time as they played in the sand, reapplied sunscreen, and dodged jellyfish. We left the beach hot and hungry, but oddly not tired of the water. Our students made a b-line to the pool the second the buses stopped, and we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon at the hotel. 

Tomorrow, believe it or not, is our last full day in Costa Rica. We will make our way back to San Jose with a few fun stops along the way and end our trip  with dinner and dancing high in the hills.

Arriving in Costa Rica

Upon arriving to San Jose, our only-a-little-exhausted travelers had a quick driving tour of the central city before a delicious lunch of chicken, salad, and mashed potatoes. Afterwards, we made our way to the country’s largest urban park and former airport, La Sabana. We had time to see our friends from the other flights and enjoy a perfectly temperate afternoon. With tanks empty, we then made our way to the hotel for dinner and an early bedtime. With the fun already started and plenty to look forward to, our students didn’t complain about the 8:45 “lights out”. An incident-free travel day is always worth celebrating, and we have plenty ahead of us!

The Road to Arenal

If every day of the trip is as fun and smooth as our first full day in Costa Rica, then we are in for a great trip! Fueled by gallo pinto and fresh fruit, our students made their way to a coffee plantation on the way to La Fortuna. At the plantation, our students learned all about the coffee growing process, tasted a coffee drink so sugary and chocolaty it won over even the anti-coffee folks, and visited our first gift shop. With lighter wallets and arms full of souvenirs, we hit the buses.   We wound our way to the other side of the mountains for lunch on the Sarapiqui River, where we were joined by iguanas, hummingbirds, and a range of colorful song birds. And We’re Off!

 Thanks to all the families for setting those early alarms, navigating bags and sleepy teens, and getting to the airport on time! We are off to a great start, and the kids couldn’t be more excited. Next stop: San José!
